About Stroudsburg Borough
Overview
Stroudsburg Borough is a borough located within Monroe County of Pennsylvania. Although it's relatively smaller than other townships and boroughs located along the far east edge of the state, it serves as the administrative center of Monroe County.
Stroudsburg is located right in the heart of the Pocono Mountains, perhaps one of the largest tourist attractions within Pennsylvania today. In fact, it brings in around $1 billion in revenue on an annual basis, due to the 8 million visitors who travel through the borough each year. Travelers and residents can easily reach Downtown Stroudsburg through Interstate 80, located nearby the county seat.
The entirety of the borough itself stretches across 1.8 square miles, with most of that being land. Stroudsburg is located around 30 miles north of Easton and 53 miles southeast of Scranton. The beginnings of Stroudsburg started with a small log cabin built by a settler named Peter LaBar, which further exemplifies the growth of Stroudsburg Borough as whole.
According to the 2010 census, Stroudsburg holds over 5,500 people, a significant increase from its humble population of 345 in the mid 1800s.
Stroudsburg Borough Today
Today's Stroudsburg hosts a large amount of businesses and residential Pocono homes, making it one of the more convenient places to live. The most notable modern area is its Downtown area, known as a place that 'reflects the rich and diverse culture of the Pennsylvania Pocono Mountains.'
Stroudsburg is a part of several counties in the region that encompass the trade area population of 250,000. It's naturally also the commercial hub of the borough, hosting many attractive Pocono real estate properties within its neighborhoods.
History
Stroudsburg Boroughs was first established in 1730, once LaBar established his homestead in the area. This homestead was actually the log cabin that gave way to the foundation of the borough.
The borough actually morphed into a borough once Jacob Stroud purchased land in the area. Stroud eventually owned over 4,000 acres of land, which encompassed several portions of the already budding developed town.
By the late 1700s, Stroud started seriously attempt developing Stroudsburg as a developed town, first starting by selling off plots of his land.
By the early 1800s, Stroudsburg become officially incorporated in February 1815. About two decades later, Monroe County was established as a fully-formed county, comprised of parts from Northampton and Pike County. Stroudsburg eventually became the county seat and remained located within Monroe County.
Many industries formed within Stroudsburg, including several early industrial industries. Stroudsburg, in fact, is home to the oldest tannery in the area, in addition to the first woolen mill and flour mill. The first saw mill in the area, too, opened during the mid 1800s.
